Capturing Value from Grid Volatility & Negative Prices
As renewable energy penetration grows, grid volatility creates frequent negative price windows — especially in highly dynamic markets like Denmark and Germany. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) thrive in this environment by charging during price drops (or negative periods) and discharging during peak demand hours. Live day-ahead electricity prices are the raw signal every BESS arbitrage strategy depends on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers on day-ahead prices, negative pricing and battery arbitrage.
What are day-ahead electricity prices?
Day-ahead prices are the hourly wholesale electricity prices set one day in advance on each market’s day-ahead auction (DAM). They reflect expected supply and demand and are the reference price for most trading and BESS arbitrage decisions.
What is BESS arbitrage?
Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) arbitrage means charging a battery when electricity is cheap (or negatively priced) and discharging when prices peak. The larger and more frequent the price spread, the greater the arbitrage revenue.
Why do negative electricity prices happen in Europe?
Negative prices occur when renewable generation (wind, solar) exceeds demand and inflexible plants keep producing. They are increasingly common in markets like Germany and Denmark — and are prime charging windows for batteries.
Which markets does this dashboard cover?
Live day-ahead prices for 17 European bidding zones plus Turkey (EPİAŞ), in EUR/MWh (and TL/MWh for Turkey), updated throughout the day.
